Why Moscone's Location Matters
Moscone Center sits in the SoMa (South of Market) neighborhood. Unlike Las Vegas, San Francisco is genuinely walkable — but only if your hotel is in the right zone. Hotels within a 10-minute walk of Moscone are sold out or expensive during Dreamforce. The next best option is BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), which connects most SF neighborhoods to the Moscone area in under 20 minutes.
September is actually the best time to be in San Francisco — the summer fog has cleared, temperatures are comfortable (60s°F), and you won't be fighting July's tourist crowds. Unlike Vegas conferences, you can actually walk outside without heat anxiety.
Hotels by Walkability Tier
San Francisco Marriott Marquis
Directly next door to Moscone Center — the most convenient hotel for Dreamforce. This is where Salesforce hosts many official events and where most executives stay. Books out first. Check the official Salesforce block before Expedia.
⭐ Best for: maximum convenience, official Salesforce partner hotelHilton San Francisco Union Square
About a 10-minute walk from Moscone via Howard or Mission St. One of SF's largest hotels — 1,900+ rooms, so more likely to have availability when Marriott Marquis is sold out. Great location in Union Square.
💼 Best for: availability when Marriott is gone, Union Square accessJW Marriott San Francisco Union Square
About 12 minutes on foot from Moscone, right on Union Square. Luxury boutique scale (344 rooms) — quieter than the Hilton behemoth. Good choice for a higher-end experience within walking range.
⭐ Best for: luxury, smaller hotel feel, Union Square dining accessGetting Around San Francisco During Dreamforce
BART: The Bay Area Rapid Transit system is excellent and reaches SFO airport, Oakland, and most SF neighborhoods. The Powell St or Montgomery St stations are closest to Moscone — about a 10-minute walk from the station. A Clipper card or tap-to-pay makes this seamless.
Rideshare: Uber and Lyft are widely available. Expect surge pricing during Dreamforce session breaks (10am, 12pm, 5pm). Budget $20–35 for most rides within SF.
Walking: SoMa and Union Square are very walkable by SF standards. If your hotel is in the Financial District or Union Square, 15 minutes on foot gets you to Moscone — San Francisco's scale is much more compressed than Las Vegas.
Dreamfest: The Dreamforce concert (Dreamfest) is held at Chase Center on the waterfront — about 3 miles from Moscone. Salesforce runs shuttles from the conference area. Check the Dreamforce app for shuttle schedules once registered.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do Dreamforce hotels sell out?
The Salesforce hotel block and hotels immediately adjacent to Moscone typically sell out 3–5 months before the conference. For September Dreamforce, that means booking by May–June at the latest. Waiting until August means paying 2–3x the normal rate or staying in Oakland.
Is it worth staying in Oakland or across the bay?
Possibly — BART from Oakland to Montgomery St takes about 20 minutes and runs reliably. Oakland hotels are significantly cheaper during Dreamforce. The tradeoff is the BART schedule (last trains around midnight) and the longer commute for early sessions.
What's the weather like in San Francisco in September?
September is peak weather in San Francisco — the summer fog has cleared, temperatures hover around 65°F (18°C) during the day, cooler in the evenings. Layers are standard SF practice. Much more comfortable than Vegas summer conferences.
